Cricket at Duthie Park seems safe after Aberdeen City Council backed down in its threat to move the pitches to another venue.

The Grades clubs which play in the Aberdeenshire Cricket Association had feared they would lose their home ground when the council deemed the venue unsafe two years ago.

The clubs argued the move by the council was due to the increase in other forms of entertainment such as Free at the Dee being staged within the grounds.

The council looked at alternative venues. The Links, Altens, Inverdee and Sheddocksley were all considered, but the association has been informed cricket is safe at Duthie Park for now.

ACA president Harvey Morrison said: "The chief executive of the council has put in writing to me cricket will continue in Duthie Park until other suitable areas are identified and developed.

"He has admitted there is no money in the budget to do this so, effectively, cricket will remain in Duthie Park.

"There is a group called Friends of Duthie Park who are trying to regenerate the use of the area. They are in favour of cricket continuing in the park and I am optimistic it will be the case for the foreseeable future."

The news has been welcomed by the clubs which play their Grades cricket at Duthie Park. Artisans, Portcullis and Academy are among the sides which play their home matches at the venue.

Mike Horrocks, secretary of Portcullis, said: "This is great news. I attended a couple of the meetings with the council to find out what their proposals were and the party line was we would be at Duthie Park until alternative facilities were in place.

"The only other option was an extra pitch at Sheddocksley but, clearly, the grounds are not suitable. It does appear, however, the council simply has nowhere else to go and we look forward to continuing with our cricket at Duthie Park."

The council insisted yesterday cricket has always featured prominently at the venue and dismissed the accusation by clubs of trying to drive the sport away to other venues throughout the city.

A spokesman for the council said: "There was never any question of sport leaving Duthie Park and the sports and recreation manager at the council has been involved in several meetings with Harvey Morrison, of the association. Duthie Park is used for a variety of other events and one pitch was lost, but cricket will always take priority at the venue."
