‘£20,000 of damage’ at Travellers camp site in Aberdeen
Surface damaged at Hazlehead Academy
By David Ewen chief reporter
Published: 14/06/2013

TAXPAYERS today faced stumping up thousands of pounds for a wrecked public cricket pitch in Aberdeen.

The damage was discovered at Aberdeen’s Hazlehead Academy playing fields, part of which was recently used as a Travellers’ camp.

More than 20 caravans left the site on Wednesday after an emergency eviction notice was served.

Aberdeen City Council’s finance chief Cllr Willie Young said: “Part of the pitch has been destroyed and it will have to be replaced. Our officers have said it will cost approximately £20,000 to fix.”

Would this be the same Hazlehead Academy pitch that was deemed not fit for purpose during the 2012 Season and written-off from the Grades fixture list?

That’s maybe where we were going wrong. If we’d gone over each and every Toon wicket with a caravan we could possibly have illicited £20k per pitch oot of the Cooncil.

PS....Top usage of "stumping up" there fae the EE. Cricket, stumps, geddit?!!!

Here's a thought - don't spend £20K "fixing" a wicket that was already unplayable and that nobody wants. Instead, spend it re-instating the wickets which we actually do want at Duthie Park.

As you know Mr P, there’s little political yardage to be gained through improvements to cricket pitches. Nor does it sell any newspapers.

It’s a perfect EE story in which they can further enrage tax-payers through reports of the actions of the travelling community.

It’s also good for the Council as they can demonstrate “having” to spend unbudgeted money which gives them a ready-made excuse for not spending cash where it’s actually needed (or indeed wanted).

And "finance chief"........."Cllr Willie Young".......... sheeeesh.

Really, will they spend this £20k? Should we not tell them nae to bother?

That's enough to pay for DP2&3 for a couple of years.
Question is do we have any contacts with the travellers? Could get them to dig up/burn the links.

Dig up/Burn the Links?

Where do you think they moved to next. By 6pm on Wednesday they had 3 caravans and vans parked on the square.[/quote]
