Duthie Park Masterplan Published

The Council is asking members of the public for their opinion on the future of Duthie Park, and have published their masterplan to illustrate their vision.

Extensive work is planned to restore the ponds, fountains and rose garden to their original Victorian splendour. Ironically they are also planning to ban cricket - one of the original reasons for the park's existance - from the park as part of their policy of moving sport away from public parks and into dedicated facilities. Also included in the plans are a new visitor centre for the Winter Gardens with a restaurant, gift shop, classroom and function room a new multi-games area with areas for tennis and five-a-side football and restoration of the bowling green.

Special exhibitions are now open at Ferryhill Library, Aberdeen Central Library and the entrance of the David Welch Winter Gardens in the park itself, to allow visitors to look at possible plans for its future development. There will also be two public meetings will be held at Ferryhill Church on Wednesday, July 19 (tommorrow) – the first from 2-4pm and the second from 7-9pm.

The public consultation exercise runs until August 25, and people are being asked to fill in and return a questionnaire, which specifically includes a question about whether or not cricket should be allowed to continue in Duthie Park. They have also joined GreenSTAT, which is an online system that gives local residents the opportunity to comment on the quality of their open spaces and how well they feel they are being managed and maintained.
