Cricket Part of Duthie Park Tradition

Cricket in Duthie ParkTwo public meetings on the council's proposed improvements to Duthie Park were held yesterday. Jeremy Skedge (Crescent) attended the second one and put forward the case for cricket continuing in Duthie Park. He made people aware of how much cricket is played and how essential use of the Duthie Park pitches is for the health of cricket in and around Aberdeen, and was heartened to receive considerable support from non-cricketers, including women and OAPs, who felt it would be a shame to lose cricket from the park.

Gordon Hull, Heritage Parks Project Manager (who was a school with Colin Milburn), is very sympathetic to cricket remaining in the park and said that most of the questionnaires returned so far highlighted the fact that cricket is part of the tradition of the park and people don't want to see it disappear. He agrees that the continuation of cricket in the park has no impact on the other improvement proposals and recognises the irony of evicting the cricketers whilst reinstating sports facilities that have fallen by the wayside.

"I came away from the meeting feeling that it was by no means a 'done deal' that cricket in Duthie Park is doomed", said Jeremy afterwards. "There are clearly others in the council who have that as their agenda but we have a very good case to put to them. However, we could easily lose the opportunity to secure the future of cricket in Duthie Park if we fail to engage with the council and let them know how strongly we feel about this issue."

Gordon is willing to meet with the Association and interested cricketers to present and discuss the plans. The meeting could be set up by emailing him or phoning on 523204. Any questionnaires need to be returned by 25 August and the summary of the responses has to be included in the council's application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
