Grade I Round Up - By Jack Nixon

Culter Bon Accord (30 points) made a strong start to the defence of its Grade 1 title, defeating Academy (14 points) by 92 runs, scoring 225 for the loss of seven wickets before bowling out the visitors for 133 on the wind swept Links.

Not for the first time opener Fazal Awan was the outstanding batsmen for the home side, and despite being dropped early in his knock, went on to score 91 runs, winning the praise of long time club servant Doug Cruickshank. ''Awan is an extraordinary player, having scored countless runs for us, many of them centuries, and at only 36 is likely to be around for a number of years,'' he said of the peerless opener who shared an opening stand of 58 with M. Ahmed.

For Academy P. Prittipati was a tireless bowler, taking four for 40, and then making a useful 48 when his side batted.

N. Mirza three for 21 and T. Malik were the chief wicket takers for Bon Accord.

At Rubislaw Aberdeen Grammar FP's(30 points) were eight wicket winners against Crescent(8 points), bowling out the visitors for 85 before reaching the required target  thanks to an unbeaten 40 from R. Swiergon. K. Anand three for 11 and Grammar's rugby stand off Sam Knudson three for 24 did the damage to set up the easy win.

Ellon Gordon(8 points) were beaten by Kemnay/ Kintore(30 points) at Kemnay by three wickets, where the newly promoted home side bowled out the visitors for a paltry 52 before losing seven wickets in the struggle to win.  On a day that belonged to the bowlers the home side were best represented by A. Mirashi who grabbed four for five and for Ellon its captain Ben Webb was a gallant loser with four for 23.

The other newcomers to Grade 1 were Inverurie Don Valley(30 points)  who scored 180 from its allocation of overs of which 48 was scored by Chris Watson. ACE Mannofield (13 points) were never in the hunt when they batted, slumping to 77 all out, this despite a magnificent 52 from I. Yahathugoda, J. Moore was the destroyer - in - chief for the new boys, capturing four for 15, but ably supported by S. White who took three for 11.

Finally in a tense, close game at Hazlehead Cults (30 points) were narrow three wicket winners. Knight Riders (17 points) clocked up 175 for the loss of eight wickets of which S. Palaniappan scored 48 and S. Arumugam 39. A. Ali grabbed three wickets for 24 for the visitors.

When Cults batted they were best served by A. Ajazi who racked up a tidy, unbeaten 61 to help his side win a nail biter of a game. The top wicket takers for the home side were P. Ballal two for 25 and P. Mallireddy who picked a brace for 30.

On Saturday the teams from Grades 2, 3 and 4 will enter the fray, no doubt hoping for warmer weather.
