Ellon Gordon v Mannofield - Report by Jack Nixon 2017

Ellon Gordon's recent demise is a "temporary thing" according to Ellon stalwart Euan Mackie who was quick to defend his side's poor start to the season which has seen 155 year old club lose its first seven games in Grade 1, while losing its grip on the Aberdeenshire Cup in the preliminary round of the competition.

"We have lost and number of key players in the last two seasons, not least Scott White and Chris Watson, but we will turn it around before the end of the season. I like to think there are young players out there who want to play the game. We are also seeking new sponsors in a bid to revive our fortunes," said a defiant Mackie who took time out from scoring at the tea interval to chat.

Not one for questioning an umpire’s decision, Mackie regarded the call of not out of star ACE Mannofield player Indika Yahathugoda when on 30 as one of those things. "We have always believed at Ellon not to dispute calls. Umpires are doing their level best. It's not easy out there, especially on a hot day," said Mackie.

In the event Yahathugoda went on to score a sumptuous 170 which included six 6's and 10 fours taking his side to 272 for eight before the home side collapsed to 113 all out but not before captain Ben Webb and Jonny Barrett had enjoyed a half century partnership.

Ross Wade was the pick of the home bowlers, grabbing six for 40, while Scott Middleton chipped in with two for a mere one run.

It was not to be Ellon's day as witnessed early in the home innings when Greg Thompson took a blinder of a catch at deep point to start the rot in the brittle home batting. Thompson went on to take three for eight against the luckless homesters, as they slid to 113 all out in pursuit of 273"

"But there will be other days," said the optimistic Mackie.
