Grades Results for w/e 19th-20th August 2017 - Dramatic Weekend for Grades Cricket

AGSFPs look set to land its first Grade 1 title since 1942 after reigning champions Bon Accord suffered a calamitous 10 wicket defeat at Kellands Park where Inverurie Don Valley bowled the Links side out for 63.

In a dramatic day for the top two, the Rubislaw side were themselves in serious danger of defeat away to Academy at 47 for the loss of four wickets, chasing 163 to win at Sheddocksley when the rain swept in to mean the match was voided, but with a superior percentage to Bon Accord who could only muster two batting points, AGSFPs now take over at the top.

The match at Inverurie was also under threat from the weather, but as the home side had covers, it meant a result was made possible, thanks to the sterling efforts of the home team who enthusiastically manned the makeshift covers on the three occasions rain stopped play during the Inverurie innings.

''Not even the rain could save us. It was a disappointing day, particularly as six of our top players were not available. It is the weakest Bon Accord side I have ever captained, but credit to Inverurie, they bowled well and took some brilliant catches. But it is not over yet, we have games against Mannofield and Academy to come, though if AGSFPs win its remaining game against Kemnay-Kintore next week, there is nothing we can do'' said Tauqeer Malik, the Bon Accord captain, singling the end of his side's near domination of the top grade over the last 10 years .

Trevor Norval, the Inverurie captain was delighted with his teams bowling attack in which Paul Cook took five for 20, and Scott White with three 20, though it was John Moore's dismissal of Fazal Awan that sparked off the demise of the champions. ''This was our best performance of the season. Paul has been a great acquisition for us. In harness with Scotty they were a formidable combination'' said Norval who in the company of Mark Strachan, calmly saw his side home in a stand worth 64 of which his partner scored 43, giving the home supporters a day to remember.

Rob Swiergon, the AGSFPs captain was pleased to be going into his side's last game in a position of strength, but said: ''We will be working hard in the nets in the coming week. Kemnay-Kintore will be well up for the game, especially as they are fighting to avoid relegation, but the destiny of the title is now in our hands”.

So while it has been tough at the top, the battle to avoid going down with Ellon Gordon is equally exciting, involving Mannofield who beat Ellon Gordon by six wickets, Crescent whose game with Knight Riders was rained off, and Kemnay-Kintore who were five wicket winners at home to Cults, making for the most dramatic finishes in Grade 1 at both ends of the table.

In all the excitement of the ups and downs, it may not have been noted that while his side has been relegated, Ben Webb, the Ellon Gordon captain has been having a great season with the bat, scoring his second century of the season, a feat not many relegated captains can claim in the rich history of the Grades.

In Grade 2 Stoneywood-Dyce were promoted along with Grampian, but only by the narrowest of margins, less than one per cent being enough to see off the challenge of unlucky Siyapa. Fraserburgh were relegated along with Banchory. In Grade 3 Stonehaven Thistle and 2nd AGSFPs step up a league.

In a disappointing season for Grade 4, the commitment of top side 2nd Methlick has shone like a beacon. It can only be hoped that their example is noted by less dedicated clubs.
