Grades Results w/e 26th-27th August 2017 - AGSFPs and Bon Accord Take the Honours

Even the weather played its part in making the weekend one to remember for ACA Grades cricket, though supporters of Kemnay-Kintore who were relegated as a consequence of AGSFPs first Grade 1 title since 1942 may not agree.

Similarly Knight Riders, Grampian and Crathie who all lost cup finals, might not be so cheerful, but then there's always next season. In the meantime let's hear it for not only AGSFPs, but Bon Accord who shrugged off the disappointment of losing out in the league, roaring back with an empathic win at Mannofield in the Aberdeenshire Cup final, sending out the clear message that Bon Accord are far from a spent force in Grades cricket.

For this aged sports writer, but not quite old enough to recall the 1942 win, the best all round team won Grade 1, displaying an all round competitiveness no other team could match, while being firmly led by Rob Swiergon who never lost sight of his stated objective of not only winning the top grade, but getting his second eleven promoted to Grade 2. I just wonder what Swiergon will do for an encore next season, though I suspect a league and Aberdeenshire Cup double might just be on the menu, not that Tauqeer Malik his opposite number at Bon Accord will be having any of it, especially after his stirring performance at Mannofield on Sunday. His seven for 52 was something to behold, but it was his flamboyant 29 runs that almost certainly kept the Knight Riders at bay just when they looked like restricting Bon Accord to less than 150 runs. The ultimate total of 196 being just too many for Somasundaram Kumarasamy’s side who did, nevertheless make a wonderful contribution on a perfect day for cricket. They will be back, building on its third place in the league, a place in the top knock out final and still in the last four of the Turriff Cup. They have in Rowan Vaduganathan a batsman for the future. His mature knock of 47 was one of note, while Andy Starling's 56 for Bon Accord would have been a man of the match winner on any other day.

Arrowdawn Gordonians will also be pleased to have come good at the end of its up and nearly down season. Winning the Bon Accord Cup against the highflying Grampian, surprising more than a few.

Stonehaven Thistle's great season ended on a high when they eased past Crathie, bowling the Balmoral side out for 47 before cruising to a nine wicket win in the Reid Cup which was presented to the winners by that grand old man of cricket John Hitchen, still getting out and about, watching games, and possibly reflecting on some of the poor discipline prevailing in one or two of the games.

And so, we are nearly at the end of another season with only the Turriff Cup to be decided. I rarely make predictions, but I'll tip Knight Riders to save the best until last, but don't write off Cults who have not had the best of seasons, especially if its charismatic captain Aqeel Ajazi can find his form. But there again you need look no further than Bon Accord for a winner, though the home side Stoneywood-Dyce might just enjoy playing on its own track. In other words, I just don't know, but just get yourselves along to a great day's cricket at the Peoples Park on Saturday September 9th.

And finally to all you clubs who suffered the ignominy of being relegated, I hope to see you all bounce back next season, including two of my favourite teams, if I am allowed the luxury of having a soft spot for Banchory and Fraserburgh.
