Grades Turriff Cup Preview for Saturday 9th September 2017

The curtain comes down on a splendid summer of ACA Grades cricket on Saturday  - though one not always blessed with the best of weather, with one of the most eagerly anticipated competitions in the Grades fixture schedule.

The Turriff Cup brings together the last four standing in the tournament which will be played this year at the Peoples Park where you are sure of a good reception, regardless of the weather.

First up an the unseemly early hour of 10am, is a mouth watering tie between Cults and Bon Accord, and while Bon Accord will be hot favourites to progress to the final in the afternoon, they will be wary of an Allan Park side who invariably lift its game when they meet Bon Accord.

Cults captain Aqeel Ajazi confirmed his charges would be up for the challenge and said: "We've not had the best of seasons, but the very thought of a game against our old foes Bon Accord, gets us fired up. The form book goes out the window in cup ties".

His opposite number Tauqeer Malik was more cautious, but equally confident of progressing to meet either Knight Riders or hosts Stoneywood-Dyce, but said: "The day usually produces a good winner. You know you have been in a contest after two games in one day. We are looking forward to a great day's cricket".

The second semi-final is no less attractive, bringing together one of the surprise packages in Grade 1 Knight Riders and the newly promoted Stoneywood-Dyce.

The Groats Road men have enjoyed a good summer, pushing both AGSFPs and Bon Accord all the way to the finish line in the hotly contested Grade 1 title race, and came close to winning the Aberdeenshire Cup at Mannofield where they fell agonisingly short of hunting down the 196 set them by winners Bon Accord. They have also beaten Grade 1 champions AGSFPs twice in knock out contests.

But for Captain Somasundaram Kumarasamy all his side's heroics will count for nothing if they end the season empty handed. "We have played well, but need to win this competition if we are to be seen as one of the top sides in Grades cricket. Getting another crack at Bon Accord in a final would be good. But I hope it is a great day for cricket".

The fourth of the four participating captains Robin Taylor of the host club for the day was more modest in his claims, but said: "Turriff Cup finals day is an enjoyable way to end the season. We are looking forward to the challenge of meeting teams we will be playing next season, but we'll not be there just to make up numbers".

Whatever the outcome it promises to be another great occasion on which to bring down the curtain on Grades cricket which has after all graced the area for the last 133 years.
