Jan Stander - Junior Report

I’m bit disappointed that I can’t make the AGM. I’m tutoring on a level 1 course in the Scottish Borders on Sunday all day. I’ve added my stats for the amount of kids introduced to the game and playing it at junior clubs of course. Just want you to stress the point that I am there for every young player in the area and if clubs have talented youngsters even though they don’t have a junior section they have to inform me so that I can have a look at them because they could be potential Scotland players for all we know. Mark Assiter who won the junior batting award for the grades is a perfect example. If he didn’t sign onto a summer holiday camp 2 years ago I wouldn’t have seen him and got him to play junior cricket. And he is in our Scotland u/15 winter training group.

I also believe that there are quite a number of clubs that want to stick with draw in the lower grades even though some clubs wants the limited over version. They have approached me and asked for my support to get it changed. I personally think to get youngsters into the game that the draw format, doesn’t do us any justice. No 14 year old wants to stand on a cricket field all day and go home and say we had a no result. They would rather lose and try and do better next time to get that feeling of winning. I understand that its been there for a number of years but we have got to look at the bigger picture.

I also didn’t get feedback from every club with the end of season report and I specifically didn’t make a column for clubs to put their names on so that they can be honest and open to get cricket going forward in the North East. I will follow up on the juniors clubs did put forward that are not forming part of a junior section. And also do my best to do some coaching sessions around the area after a Kwik cricket festival that we intend running in the summer. We hope to have one festival a month across the region. Also intending to run a UKCC Level 1 in Inverurie before the season starts. Will get the details to clubs and on the website.
