Grades Results for w/e 28th-29th April 2018 - Cracking Start for the Champions

AGSFPs served notice after one game that they will not easily relinquish the Grade 1 title so hard won last season, but the Rubislaw outfit will also have noted the good start former champions Bon Accord have made.
AGSFPs captain Rob Swiergon was rightly pleased with his team's eight wicket win at home to Mannofield. In particular he would be happy that old hand, opener Alex Keith has hit the ground running, scoring an unbeaten 49 in his side's chase of the 74 target set by Mannofield.
Across the city at the Links another captain was making his case, this time with the ball. Anyone having doubts about ''old'' man Malik being up to the challenge of a long season really had to be there to see him make light of the years.
Tauqeer Malik, not for the first time started the season with a bang, taking four Stoneywood-Dyce wickets for a mere 11 runs, enabling Bon Accord to contain the league's newcomers to 119 for nine before easing past the required total for the loss of only three wickets, mainly due to the efforts of stalwarts Mirza(57) and Awan(28 not out).
But while Bon Accord and AGSFPs may be the popular choices for the title, Inverurie were quietly making their way at the expense of Crescent in a closely fought affair at Kellands Park, easing victory by a mere 14 runs.
I will therefore be hedging my bets, as both these sides could throw down a challenge in the coming months.
The league's other new boys Grampian made an impressive start to their campaign, pushing Academy all the way in another nail-biter, eventually losing out by three wickets with Cults and Knight Riders yet to enter the lists, all talk of it being a two horse race should be put on hold.
But if you were looking for an individual brilliance, the place to have been, even on a cold, blustery afternoon was at Countesswells where Amith Gowda hit a sparkling opening day of the season century in a Grade 2 game. His unbeaten 101 was I am told full of enterprise, and quality strokes, helping Gordonians to a remarkable 278 for the loss of seven wickets. In fairness 2nd AGSFPs made a brave fist of chasing down the massive total, ending up with 223 with one wicket still standing. In the only other game played in the division Fraserburgh gave Aberdeen Super Kings a 155 run beating, dismissing the visitors for 25 after setting them 181 to win. Fraser Lawrance was the Broch hero of the day, taking six wickets for six runs in a spell he will remember for the rest of his life.
In the only game played in Grade 3 Crathie were bowled out at Balmoral for 52 in the all Aberdeenshire clash with Dunecht who eased home for the loss of two wickets.
All in all a goodly start to the season, notwithstanding, the inclement weather, and with the prospect of more quality cricket in all 3 grades, I am glad to say, I will have the pleasure of reporting on it, now that my rugby duties are all but wrapped up.
