Grades Results for w/e 26th-27th May 2018 - Swinging in the Sun

The wonderful early summer weather has certainly given Grades cricket a great opportunity to showcase itself, a chance grabbed by a number of batsmen who amply demonstrated their skills in the May sunshine. In Grade 1, Akhlaq Bashir blasted his way to 126 for Bon Accord in a game at the Links where they beat Academy, while John Varghese stroked his way to an unbeaten 111 for Grampian in the victory over Mannofield. There were also solid knocks from Karan Anand (56) for AGSFPs and a match winning unbeaten 84 for Rowan Vaduganathan for Knight Riders at Kellands Park, while in the same match Chris Watson hit 59 for Inverurie.

The run fest was not confined to the top flight, as Brian Veldsman demonstrated at Stonehaven for Ellon Gordon, scoring a masterful 168 against Stonehaven Thistle. Cory Bowie of Fraserburgh was also in fine form in Grade 2, hitting 65 not out in his side's win against 2nd AGSFPs. Alan Robson was in great nick for Methlick in the game against Siyapa and while he was on the losing side, his 88 was a thing of beauty.

In Grade 3, the day's heroics came from Owen Thorpe of Portcullis who although also on the beaten side, whose 88 made a huge contribution to the game with Dunecht.

But while it was an opportunity for batsmen to shine, there were also some great performances with the ball, most ably shown by Bon Accord's veteran skipper Tauqeer Malik who claimed five wickets for 27, rolling back the years in the process against Academy. In the same division Karan Anand of AGSFPs showed he is not only a fine batsman but returning the figures of four for 45 against Stoneywood-Dyce. But the bowling performance of the day was from his team mate Roland Knudson whose three for 18, included a hat-trick. Umair Qureshi claimed four for 21 for Crescent in their win against Cults at Allan Park.
In Grade 2, the duo of Andrew Dolman and Jamil Shaikh, took seven wickets for league leaders Gordonians. Chris Gospel was on the money for Fraserburgh, taking three for 10.
In Grade 3, Alan Burnett of Dunecht, helped himself to four for 45, only to end on the losing side against Portcullis. So overall, it was a day full of achievement, but where oh where, were the spectators, on a day of remarkable feats, including Mannofield where on the most perfect of days, the Strathmore Union game of the day between Mannofield and derby rivals Stoneywood-Dyce was watched by a handful of people.
Sunday saw the Grades side travel to Gordonstoun the wonderful weather which marked the start to the season has marked an unprecedented burst of run scoring, when a Grades Select side made hay while the sun shone, marking the 125th anniversary of cricket in the North of Scotland Cricket Association (NoSCA).
Bon Accord batsman Akhlaq Bashir led the way with a blistering attack on the NoSCA Select, racking up 140 in 94 balls in the company of AGSFPs Alex Keith who also posted a three figure score of 128 in their partnership of 252. Next up was the in form Karan Anand also from AGSFPs who hit five sixes in his brief but explosive knock of 42, effectively taking the game away from the stunned northerners, and at 373 for three the visitors were out of sight in the glorious Moray sunshine. Not surprisingly the home side were unable to match the outrageous total set by the Grades Select side, and despite some gallant knocks, lost wickets quickly, ending up all out for 159.
