Grades Results for w/e 2nd-3rd June 2018 - Record for Ellon Gordon

Ellon Gordon stole the headlines in the Grades games, setting a record total score for the Aberdeenshire Grades at Rubislaw where they racked up an astonishing 459 for the loss of only one wicket from their allocation of 45 overs, stunning 2nd AGSFPs in the process. Opener Brian Veldsman led the way with 170 in the company of fellow opener Stuart Davies who was on an unbeaten 155 when the Ellon Gordon innings closed. First wicket down batsman Jon Barrett also got in on the act, hitting 107 not out. Not surprisingly the home side failed to match the fireworks of the visitors, but battled on, valiantly reaching 122 for seven from their 45 overs in the Grade 2 fixture.
In the top Grades game of the day, the shoot out in the sun at the Links in Grade 1, Bon Accord just held off the challenge of last years league champions AGSFPs. Set 190 to win, AGSFPs looked down and out at 86 for eight, but battled back to come within 35 runs of the home total, thanks to a half century stand between captain Rob Swiergon(67) and Roland Knudson(37). On a day of fine performances home captain Tauqeer Malik stared with the ball, taking four for 18, while Andy Win rescued the home batting with a patient 56. Knudson made claims for man of the match with four for 27 when Bon Accord batted. Malik admitted to being a relieved man at the end of the game, and said “This was a great game of cricket, AGSFPs pushed us all the way”. Swiergon was gracious in defeat and said “They probably just about deserved to win. We gave them 30 runs too many when they batted, but it was a great advert for the local game. There’s a lot of cricket to be played before the title is decided”. Elsewhere in the division Knight Riders and Crescent kept their title hopes alive with solid wins, while on any other day Gordonians 298 for three wickets would have represented a huge score in Grade 2, but given Ellon Gordon’s massive total it paled into insignificance, but was nevertheless a clear message that their 209 win will give the Gordon Park side something to think about before the two meet later on in the season.
In Grade 3 only one game was started down at Balmoral but was washed out after the first innings whilst the other games in Grade 3 were not played due to clubs unable to raise teams. An alarming state of affairs this early in the season.

Sunday saw AGSFPs make amends for a disappointing Saturday as they took on Grampian in the first round of the Aberdeenshire Cup by setting up a grand total of 303 for 5 led by an unbeaten 177 by Karan Anand ably supported with 62 by Connor McKinney setting a total that the Grampian home side could only muster 81 as the guts of the Grampian batsman were bowled out by Harry Mapplebeck taking 5 for 18.
