Grades Results for w/e 16th-17th June 2018 - Both Last Season’s Aberdeenshire Cup Finalists Knocked Out

The only game played in Grade 1 proved to be a significant one as Inverurie found their form, forcing themselves into the fringes of the title race, handing champions AGSFPs a second defeat in three games in the process at Kellands Park. The result was not a shock for AGSFPs captain Rob Swiergon who said ''I said at the start of the season, Inverurie would be a force in the league. They certainly made their point today. We'll just have to regroup and get on with it. There's still a lot of good cricket to be played as the season unfolds. It is very competitive, that's for sure.'' Despite a rollicking 61 for AGSFPs Alex Keith, it was the home bowlers who held sway. Trevor Norval led the way with three for only seven runs, while George Hadden weighed in with three of his own for 31 as the Rubislaw side were dismissed for 178. The home reply was led by Hadden who scored a responsible 40, but it was Chris Watson who led the run chase, hitting a belligerent 92, enabling Inverurie to win with seven wickets in hand.

In Grade 2, a high scoring game at Fraserburgh was narrowly won by 2nd Knight Riders who after scoring 272 for five wickets, just held off the challenge of the home side who were only four runs short of the 2nd Knight Riders total. Liam Bowie was an unlucky loser, having battled to a superb unbeaten 142. At Rubislaw, Stonehaven Thistle were seven wicket winners, having bowled 2nd AGSFPs out for 109.

In Grade 3, there was only one game completed in which leaders Banchory beat Portcullis by eight wickets at the Burnett Park. Graeme Nixon starred with the ball, taking four for 11 as the visitors crashed to 62 all. Josh Crawley hit an unbeaten 38 as the home side eased to a comfortable win.

Sunday saw the quarter-finals of the Aberdeenshire Cup with perhaps the biggest surprise of all was last year’s champions Bon Accord being knocked out by the new comers to Grade 1 Stoneywood-Dyce, the winning captain Andy Rayner said “this was an excellent all-round performance from my team, especially with an average age of just 20, the youngest being 13 and the oldest (me) being 25 years old.” The Bon Accord wickets fell at regular interval with only Presanth Gopinathan offering resistance with an unbeaten 47 taking the Bon Accord total to 134, despite the Bon Accord skipper Tauqeer Malik taking 4 for 15 wickets the Stoneywood-Dyce side led with Jack Mitchell’s all-round performance of 73 not out and taking 3 for 35 wickets, Jack was ably supported by Mathew Dalton’s innings of 32 taking the home side over the line. The other last year’s finalists Knight Riders must have thought that they had done enough with a total of 168 led by Sivaganesan Palaniappan’s half century, but their total was easily overhauled by the Mannofield side led by the inform Indika Yahathugoda’s 76 supported by Rahul Chandu’s 42. Meanwhile, at Alan Park AGSFPs chased down the Cults total of 157 and at the Links the visitors Inverurie were too much for the Crescent home side as George Hadden ripped out the heart of the Crescent batting, taking 6 for 26 leaving the visitors needing 99 run which they easily managed with the loss of just one wicket. This now leaves the Semi-Finals with Inverurie taking on Stoneywood-Dyce at Kellands Park and AGSFPs taking on Mannofield at Rubislaw on Sunday 22nd July 2018.

Sunday also saw 2 rescheduled league matches in G2 with Methlick losing out to neighbours Ellon Gordon with the bulk of the Ellon Gordon total of 275 set by Tom Proctor’s 98 and Brian Veldsman’s 86 which proved too much for the Methlick side despite a half century from veteran Colin Addison. The Siyapa encounter with Aberdeen Super Kings was effectively a one-sided affair as the Siyapa total of 151 was too much for the Aberdeen Super Kings as they were skittled out for just 65 runs
