Junior Cricket - A Sight for Sore Eyes 2018

The weather was perfect, the organisation was spot on, and the participants were wildly enthusiastic, making for a great day of cricket at the Gordon Park on Monday 18th June 2018. Thanks to the meticulous planning of Ellon Gordon’s junior convener Ian Duncan, ably supported by Cricket Scotland’s participation manager Neil Cameron, and six dedicated volunteers, over 50 primary school children from the Ellon area were able to enjoy a morning of cricket. For most of the youngsters it was the first time the pupils from four primary schools in the Ellon catchment area had played Quick Cricket, and I suspect not for the last time, if the reaction afterwards was any indication of the pleasure they had over the session. Ian Duncan was certainly pleased with the morning’s activity and said “It looks like our attempts to promote the game is paying off, and hopefully we will have young cricketers coming forward to play for Ellon Gordon Cricket Club in the years to come", a view shared by Neil Cameron who added ”Ian has been going round all the local primary schools, making pupils and staff aware of the joys of cricket, and on Saturday mornings has been running coaching classes for around 15 very keen youngsters. His efforts deserve to pay off." But while Ellon was the centre of attention on Monday, there are other initiatives that are taking the willow on leather sport to the community, not least Mannofield and Stoneywood-Dyce where regular sessions are being held with energetic, enthusiastic youngsters who one day will replace those who currently play the game in the Grades. Ian Duncan certainly believes so and said “There is talent aplenty out there, we just have to ensure we tap into the boys and girls who want to play this great game.”
I would be delighted to hear from any club of such schemes, for not only publication on this worthy website, but to a wider audience in a bid to sell the game to the great unwashed public in Aberdeen and area.
