An Afternoon in Two Places for Jack Nixon

It's difficult to be in two places at once, something I tried to do last Saturday, frustrating myself no end by trying to take in the top match of the day in the Strathmore & Perthshire Cricket Union (SPCU) at Mannofield, while taking in the best of the action from the Links.
But while I am a regular visitor to the North-East's top ground, I can count on one hand the number of times, I have been at one of original venues of club cricket. In the end both visits, had their own appeal, not least being the opportunity to catch up with Falkland, the current leaders of the highly competitive SPCU. Having seen the start of the Mannofield game, I was then happy to make my way to the Links for the Grade 1 clash between Crescent and Mannofield, little knowing that in Crescent captain Nathan Thangaraj I was going to meet up with one of the truly nice guys of the Grades game. Nathan, made me more than welcome, introducing me to each and every member of his team, not that their opponents were any less accommodating, they just happened to be fielding for most of the time I was there, but over tea, I did catch up with some well kent faces from Mannofield. Among those I chatted to was that most prolific of run scorers Indika Yahathugoda who while having an off day with the bat still managed to grab the headlines, taking three for 24, but not enough to win the game for his side. The spoils went instead to the home side, thanks to superb knocks of 67 and 62 from Umair Qureshi and Sohaib Tahseen. Well done guys, a pleasure to watch. The consolation for the losers was the quality of their fielding, in particular their catching was out of this world, although on this occasion catches didn't win matches. All in all, a great afternoon, and while I am not prepared to take sides, I would not begrudge Crescent the Grade 1 title at the end of the season and will certainly watch them in action again. In fact, I might just pop along to Groats Road next Saturday to see them play Knight Riders, another of the title hopefuls. It will also be an opportunity to meet up with another of my favourite captains, Somu Kumarasamy who I know is quietly confident of landing the Grade 1 title. It promises to be a great contest, especially as both sides are so sensibly led, promising that it will be cricket that matters, and no distractions, apart from an excellent tea.
