Cup Semi-Finals Sunday 22nd July 2018 - An Afternoon at the Seaside

AGSFPs kept themselves in with a chance of winning a league and cup double after two good wins in Grade 1 and the Aberdeenshire Cup, but will need to go through the gears if they are to overhaul Bon Accord and Knight Riders in what is without exception, the most exciting title race in years.
But for me a trip to the most northerly outpost in Grades cricket made for a great Sunday out, although I did neglect to take my bucket and spade to sunny, hot Fraserburgh. The occasion was the semi-final of the Bon Accord Cup, the visitors were those most cheerful of sides, 2nd Knight Riders who as a club are making themselves many friends with their flair and generally good attitudes they bring to the sport. The home side who are in my book, one of the friendliest in the Grades, while also highly competitive at the same time. They also serve up a real mean tea. The game turned out to be highly entertaining, confirming for me that the old saying catches win matches is so true, and if the home side can carry the form of Sunday into the final, they will be nailed on certs to lift the cup on Sunday19th August
Two of the catches in particular held by the Broch side were fit to grace any occasion, and in the end of the day turned the game the way of the homesters. But the man of the afternoon was without doubt Chris Gospel whose sparkling 53 in the home total of 156 for five was a thing of beauty, before going on to claim five wickets for mere 12 runs, restricting the Groats Road side to 104 for nine. Mr Gospel embodied all that is good in cricket, playing with a smile on his face throughout the match, making for a good day out for me. And finally, a word of thanks to the young, friendly and polite volunteer who looked after my every need at the tea interval in the neat, tidy clubhouse where many a friendship has no doubt forged over the years. It was a pleasure to meet you. I am just sorry not to have picked up your name, but you'll go far in the catering industry if you have the mind to embark on such a career.
