Grades Results for w/e 4th-5th August 2018 - Title for Banchory and Portcullis into the Final of the Reid Cup

Banchory took pride of place in another weekend of first class cricket in the Grades, for despite the non-fulfilment of fixtures in Grade 3, the Burnett Park soldiered on putting the difficult recent years behind them to land the league title. Appropriately, Banchory sealed the victory with a win at the expense of Dunecht, their nearest rivals, turning some quality performances in the process, including two fine bowling performances from Dean and Chad Abbott who turned in the figures of four for 27 and three for 29 as they bowled out the visitors for 110. The home reply was led by Carl Counsell who stroked his way to splendid 59, enabling his side to land the spoils. In the same division, the clash between Portcullis and 2nd Methlick turned out to be one to remember for Bob Adie who top scored with 25 for the home side, hitting his career best for the club. Quite a feat for the popular 69 year old, and greatly appreciated by all his team mates. For the winners, the indefatigable Aussie Deni Sarafimoski kept his scoring run up, easing to a stubborn 18, as befitting a batsman who had played at a higher level for the Methlick first team two weeks ago.

In the meantime, the so called super stars of Grade 1 were slugging it out, or not in the case of league leaders Bon Accord who were conceded 30 points by relegation haunted Academy, while probably sealing their own fate, and helping Bon Accord to move within touching distance of the title. The surprise defeat of Knight Riders at Kellands Park, effectively reducing the chase to a two horse race between the Links side and the defending champions AGSFPs. Inverurie made 184 for seven before bowling out the Groats Road side out for 144. AGSFPs were made to work for their win at Rubislaw where they were set a challenging 167 for seven, but scraped home with two wickets in hand thanks to a sound knock of 43 from the reliable Eddie Steinson. For the visitors veteran Michael Louw also scored a responsible 43. Crescent also made their presence felt in the defeat of Cults who despite the reverse, look to be safe from relegation, given the plight of Academy and Grampian. An impressive 226 for eight wickets of which Umair Mughal scored 87 and with captain Nathan Thangaraj adding 51, it proved too much for the Allan Park side who were bowled out for 137. Mannofield's 75 run win against Grampian ensures they will enjoy top flight cricket next season.

In Grade 2, leaders Ellon Gordon continue to set the pace after captain Ben Webb spear headed his side's batting with a fine unbeaten 85 as they cruised past the 158 set by Stonehaven Thistle for the loss of only one wicket. Fraserburgh were equally impressive in easing to a nine wicket of their own at home to 2nd AGSFPs, moving into second place in the process.

All in all a great weekend for local cricket, not least for the venerable Mr Adie of Portcullis.

On Sunday Portcullis reached the final of the Reid Cup when they beat 2nd Grampian by 10 wickets at Sheddocksley. Grampian batted first, and were dismissed for 52 in 16.1 overs. Portcullis knocked off the runs in 14 overs without losing a wicket. Dave Mitchell was the Portcullis stand out, taking two wickets for six runs, and scoring 35 not out when his side batted.

Portcullis will meet Banchory in the final at Mannofield on Sunday August 19.
