Grades Results Bon Accord and Reid Cup Finals 2018

In a weekend of quality cricket in the Grades, it is hard to know where to begin for fear of overlooking one of the games, competitions, or notable individual performances.
So, at the risk of offending, let me say my moment of the weekend was on Sunday at Mannofield when an enthusiastic gathering from Fraserburgh hailed their teams emphatic win in the final of the Bon Accord Cup. Liam Bowie, the Broch captain was in best traditions of North-East understatement, underwhelmed by the occasion, but said “This is a great club. I am proud to be their captain.” Indeed, sir, it was a marvellous day for us all to witness a travelling support at any cricket game. I look forward to the day when every team has such appreciative fans. The 42 run win at the expense of Gordonians was achieved on the back of team effort, self-belief and a will to win, sadly not evident in the Countesswells team.

But just in case you think I have forgotten the fact that there two finals at the North-East’s home of cricket, nothing could be further from the truth. How could I possibly forget the pulverising 102 runs scored by Banchory’s Sam Rotherham in their handsome win over Portcullis in the Reid Cup. The Yorkshireman’s first ever century was a thing of beauty, and power, and included seven mighty sixes, proving to be the difference between the two entertaining Grade 3 sides.
Goodwill, and sportsmanship abounding among all four finalists, and best summed up by your eloquent president Martin Auld at the presentations of both cups.
And finally, it did my heart good to see Leanne Broadley turnout for the Brochers as their 12th man. Look out guys women’s cricket is on the move.
Oh, and by the way, the small matter of the semi-final of the Aberdeenshire Cup was finally settled at Kellands Park where Inverurie overcame Stoneywood-Dyce by the tiny margin of four runs to progress to the final at Mannofield where they will meet AGSFPs on Sunday 26th August. And while I can’t be at two places at the same time, I promise to be at this epic encounter, even if it is only to see Scott White enjoy his favourite venue, and perhaps prove to be a match winner, or something or other where Aberdeenshire Cup finals are concerned.
