Grades Results for w/e 25th-26th August 2018 - The End of a Great Season

And so, one of the most competitive seasons in recent years has finally reached its exciting conclusions, apart from the small matter of the Aberdeenshire Cup Final which was unfortunately postponed on Sunday morning. We also have the first playing of the T10 Aberdeen Challenge Cup, scheduled to be played this coming Sunday. An event to look forward to, bringing together the clubs in the area for a celebration of a great season. I just hope the organisers of the two red letter days for cricket in the North-East will have the common sense, not to hold them on the same day. But that's just my opinion, I will of course adhere to whatever arrangement prevails, and cover both occasions for my various outlets.

In the meantime, I am happy to reflect on the league outcomes, including Bon Accord's notable performance of under lining their ability to bounce back, especially after being written off by some pundits, as being past their best not for the first time, Bon Accord came good when it mattered, holding off the challenge of defending champions AGSFPs, and of course Knight Riders who never gave up, battling to the end. And there were others who briefly flourished, including Inverurie and Crescent who will both live to have their day in the sun, but not this season. But sadly, where there are winners, there must also be losers, and in this case, it was Grampian and Academy who now drop into Grade 2 where there are no guarantees about coming straight back. This is of course exactly what Ellon Gordon did in some style, although their ''bogey'' team Gordonians seemed to have their measure whenever the two met. And while no team has a divine right to be in the top flight, it's my opinion, Ben Webb proved he is a captain and leader intent on keeping the oldest side in Grade 1 for as long as he is in charge. The race to see who went up with Ellon Gordon was truly breath taking, going right to the wire, but it was Fraserburgh who first blinked going down to gallant Stonehaven Thistle in their last game, although it scarcely mattered, as Gordonians did the business at Gordon Park, winning by a margin. But spare a thought for Stonehaven Thistle who must have thought they did enough to save themselves from the drop. Aberdeen Super Kings were equally committed, and no one will grudge them saving their season, especially after their good run of form in the run in.
In Grade 3, the negativity surrounding the non-fulfilment of fixtures was compensated by some fine, close encounters, but in the end of the day Banchory were good and worthy winners, losing only one game in their return to Grade 2. But what of 2nd Grampian who came from nowhere to claim the second promotion place at the expense of long term favourites Dunecht and fast finishing Portcullis. Well done to them, partly compensating for their first team being relegated from the top flight.
All in all, a wonderful season, and one I have enjoyed watching from the cheap seats. Roll on next year, but before then I would remind you, I am still waiting for more entries for my junior of the year competition. I already have a full house for my award of player of the year. I'll hopefully see you all at the annual dinner on Friday 9th November.
