T10 and Aberdeenshire Cup Final Reflection 2018

And so the cricket season of 2018 is all but over, with only the Turriff Cup on Saturday to be played before we call a halt on a remarkable season of weather and cricket.
But first it would only be fair to reflect on a splendid weekend of cricket in which the initiative of Aberdeenshire Cricket Club was well and truly rewarded at Mannofield on Sunday when a celebration of all that is good in the game took place, attracting a sizeable crowd to the area’s top ground.

The winners of the inaugural T10 Aberdeen Challenge Cup were perhaps not surprisingly Aberdeenshire, not that Gordonians, the runners up, and a Grades Select, and Stoneywood- Dyce did not acquit themselves well, treating the spectators to a feast of good cricket, while renewing old friendships, and perhaps making new ones.

Organiser Dale de Neef of the host club was delighted with the response, and looked forward to repeating the exercise next season and said “We have learned much from this first tentative bid to celebrate cricket in the Aberdeen area, and with some fine tuning, we will hopefully build on the success of the day. I am very grateful to those who helped organise the event, not least Andy Lowden and Jack Nixon who sponsored the two cups. But in the end of the day it was a team effort, involving a number of dedicated individuals who made it all happen.”

For the record Aberdeenshire chased down the challenging total of 121 set by Gordonians from their 10 overs, while Stoneywood-Dyce celebrated their return to the top flight of Scottish club cricket by winning the 2018 Cup against the Grades Select, played between the two losing finalists.

While this extravaganza of cricket was going on, the more serious matter of the final of the Aberdeenshire Cup was being played at the Lairds, the home of Methlick where Inverurie were comfortable eight wicket winners after bowling out AGSFPs for 110.

Chris Watson hit an unbeaten 57 for the winners, while Gary Coutts and Scott White did the damage with the ball, taking four for 15, and three for 18.

Gary Coutts was adjudged man of the match.

On a very personal note, I just hope these two big occasions never clash on the same day again, as it was I was left with the difficult decision of where to be on Sunday, and in the end was greatly aggrieved to miss out on a visit to Methlick, one of my favourite grounds, while missing out on the most prestigious game of the season in Grades cricket.
