Fraserburgh a Club in the Community - 2018

At a time when much is being made of the need for sporting organisations to get out in the community to promote their product, it is gratifying to know that one cricket club in the ACA Grades is doing just that, and already reaping rewards.

Fraserburgh Cricket Club who had a season to be proud of, winning the Bon Accord Cup, while just missing out on promotion to Grade 1 has embarked on a campaign of attracting new members to the club, recognising the steady decline in youngsters taking up the game.

Michael Watson, one of those responsible for the initiative to get among the community at the Broch said “We are a club with a proud tradition of playing the game, but it has become clear over recent years that we need to bring in members. We can’t live on the success of winning the Aberdeenshire Cup in 1973, or indeed picking up the Bon Accord Cup at Mannofield this season. Accordingly, we have laid out our stall to bring youngsters into the game at the East Links. I like to think what we have done can be replicated elsewhere in the area, or just helpful for other Grades Clubs. We would be happy to share our experiences.”

Among the initiatives undertaken by the forward thinking Brochers is the Cricket Scotland idea of All Stars Cricket for four to eight year olds, Saturday sessions in the town centre, and organising Kwik Cricket Festivals for Primary Schools. All this while improving the facilities at and on the ground.

The use of social media has also proved to be a useful tool, leading to fresh faces coming into the game at the most northerly venue in the ACA Grades, but certainly not the most out of touch.

Clubs who want to discuss the Fraserburgh experiences should contact Michael on, or even meet up with him at the Annual ACA Dinner and Prize presentation at the Holiday Express Inn on Friday 9th November 2018
