Sad News - Ian Cumming

A talented all-round sportsman, Ian was as equally well known in North-East footballing circles. During the late 50s, while at Cummings Park school, Ian was a fixture in the Aberdeen Primary Schools Select. On moving up to Northfield Academy, Ian signed for Banks o' Dee 'A' and hit a record 75 goals in a season during his time with them. A move to Aberdeen followed, with Ian making a handful of first team appearances in 1968. On being freed by Eddie Turnbull, Ian had a spell in the Highland League playing for and managing Inverness Thistle and Elgin City, awarded a Testimonial for Thistle v. Aberdeen in 1982.

From a cricketing perspective, Ian joined Artisans in the early '60s after developing a flair for cricket with the Boys Brigade. He was part of the successful Artisans side of the late '60s and early '70s, the club picking up the Grade 1 championship and the Aberdeenshire Cup, with Ian also featuring for the Grades Select during this period. His footballing move north meant appearances in the Grades were curtailed until 1985 when Ian moved back to the area. He became the driving force behind Artisans, helping the club to the healthy position of being able to field two XIs, and with the first team picking up a string of trophies throughout the '90s. Ian retired from cricket in 1999, but was a regular spectator at the club's matches for as long as his health would allow.

A celebration of Ian's life to be held at Aberdeen Crematorium Hazlehead (West Chapel) on Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at 9.30am to which all family and friends are respectfully invited. Family flowers only please. If you wish wear a touch of red.
