Heavy late afternoon rain resulted in a spate of rain-affected draws in the Grades at the weekend, including the day's top game at the Links where Bon Accord were forced to settle for a second league draw of the season against league leaders and potential Grade 1 champions, Cults.
Although in the end of the day it may not affect the final destination of this season's league title, current champions Bon Accord will have been frustrated to have lost their best chance to date to beating their traditional rivals, having reduced them to 65 for five chasing a total of 218 from 45 overs for victory, following on their previous defeats by the Allan Park side in the Small Clubs and Aberdeenshire Cup competitions.
The rain-enforced draw at the Links allowed Kintore to make up ground in the race for second spot, with a seven-wicket win over Ellon, all-rounder Dougie Anderson top-scoring for the visitors, as well as taking five for 50 in the Ellon innings.
There was less good fortune for Stonehaven however as their game against bottom-placed Grammar FPs ended 3 overs short of the 55-over limit needed to count as a concluded game; while elsewhere Banchory and Inverurie had enough time to beat Mannofield and Artisans respectively.
In Grade 2 2nd Cults, like their seniors, were rescued by the rain when five wickets down chasing an improbable 267 against Caledonian for victory - a result which enhances the chances of the visitors recording a third successive promotion; while St Ronald also had to settle for the worse of a rain-affected draw against Anchorians.
Crathie comfortably beat Dunecht to retain the leadership of Grade 3, while 2nd Kintore slipped up for a second successive week against Portcullis, and Turriff secured an important win over Fraserburgh. 2nd Banchory beat 2nd Dunecht in the only game to be played to a conclusion in Grade 4, with 2nd Ellon and 2nd FPs being gifted walkovers bys 2nd St Ronald and 2nd Stonehaven respectively.
