Grades Results 16th/17th August 2008

Cults’ first victory over Bon Accord this season now makes them odds-on favourites to take the Grade 1 title for a further season; while next Saturday’s match between Kintore and Bon Accord, short of a heavy defeat of Cults by Banchory, looks as if it will now be a tussle for the runners up spot.

At the foot of the Grade 1 table meanwhile, with Inverurie, 2nd Cults and Caledonian all losing, Mannofield look to have assured their league 1 status for a further season.

Who replaces them has still to be determined, with both St Ronald and Grammar FPs dropping points, while Gordonians comfortably beat Academy to push the Duthie Park side closer to relegation, and draws for Kemnay and Artisans threw them a lifeline in the battle to stay up.

The top of Grade 3 will also go to the final day, with 2nd Kintore re-igniting their promotion hopes with a comfortable victory over 2nd Banchory, while Turriff unexpectedly went down to defeat, albeit narrow, against bottom side 2nd Grammar.  Dunecht scored a vital win over Stoneywood-Dyce in their battle to secure Grade 3 survival, leaving the Peoples Park side battling it out with 2nd Methlick, who lost to Crescent, to avoid the drop to Grade 4.

2nd Stonehaven won a closely contested final of the Johnston Cup, a seventh wicket partnership of 53 between man of the match D. Long junior and P Hay, plus two critical dropped catches by Portcullis, proving decisive in a low-scoring game at the Duthie Park.  Stonehaven’s win gives them a league-cup double, on a day which saw 2nd Gordonians secure the second promotion spot to Grade 3, in their first season since re-entering the league, with victory over 2nd Mannofield.
