As the sun finally appeared to greet the arrival of the second half of the season, St Ronald kept alive their hopes of taking both Grade 2 and Grade 3 titles with comfortable wins over a below-strength Cults-Artisans side in Grade 2, and K Imran taking a century off 2
nd Ellon in Grade 3. With Arrowdawn Gordonians also going down to a nine-wicket defeat at Methlick, the King’s College-based team now have pole position in both leagues.
Elsewhere in Grade 2, Mark Oldham was another centurion but in a losing cause as Anchorians won a high-scoring game against Fraserburgh at the Duthie Park; while Crathie and 2nd Banchory played out the season’s first tied game at Balmoral.
In Grade 1 meanwhile there were few major surprises as Cults completed a comfortable double over a Queens Cross side, looking increasingly doomed to an early return back to Grade 2, while Kintore continued their recent recovery against Grammar FPs, Inverurie held out to draw against a strong Ellon combination, and Mannofield slipped further down the table losing to Banchory at the Burnett Park with Banchory skipper Sajid Hasan again returning a solid all-round performance.
In Grade 3 2nd Grammar FPs overcame local rivals 2nd Gordonians, ahead of the sides’ meeting in the Reid Cup semi-final on Sunday, while 2nd Queens Cross again had to scratch against 2nd Methlick, and Dunecht gained further useful points in a low-scoring game on the Cowdray Estate.
Teenager Ryan West turned in a good all-round performance to help Kemnay repeat their Cup quarter-final victory over Portcullis in Grade 4, while Turriff’s P. Bijl was once again amongst the wickets following up his demolition of 2nd Dunecht by taking a further four cheap wickets as 2nd Mannofield were dismissed for just 37 at the Haughs.
With Inverurie and Crescent both scratching their Cup Quarter-finals, and Kintore agreeing to postpone their outstanding game against Mannofield to July 11th, the Sunday programme was reduced to the semi-final rounds of the Grade 3 and 4 competitions, top sides Knightriders and Kemnay clashing in the Johnston Cup, while at Countesswells there was a double header as 2nd Gordonians met Grammar in the Reid Cup, while their 3rd team were in action against Stoneywood-Dyce.
