There were few major surprises in the latest round of matches in Grade 1 at the weekend, as last season’s champions Bon Accord required just 27 overs to overhaul promoted Gordonians’ total of 180 at Countesswells, openers Veldsman and Awan both recording half centuries for the league leaders; while Cults also returned to winning form, comfortably beating Ellon in their first game of the season at the Allan Park Stadium, with former Anchorians’ captain Chris Forbes contributing five useful wickets. Elsewhere Grammar FPs suffered a second successive reverse at the Links, this time against Mannofield, for whom Rane led the run chase with 60; while skipper Vai Bode’s knock of 30 was insufficient to give his side a sufficient target against Stonehaven, before he subsequently fractured his finger in the field.
In Grade 2 Academy chose to bat out time against Queens Cross at the Duthie Park; but Fraserburgh’s poor run of form continued away to an Inverurie team who, even at this early stage in the season look poised to make an early return to Grade 1, while 2nd St Ronald fell 2 runs short of forcing victory against Methlick at Lairds. Newcomer Mohammed Moizuddin top-scored for Caledonian, but it was not enough to stop the town club going down to another defeat away to Crathie.
In Grade 3 Crescent, having made a promising start to reach 99 for no wicket at one point, collapsed to all out for 125 – a total Stoneywoopd easily overhauled with an undefeated century from Colin Moir. The Knightriders’ juggernaut was brought to a halt at Rubislaw as they were held to a draw by 2nd Grammar.
Of the fancied teams in Grade 4 Kemnay beat Turriff; but Portcullis lost again this time to 2nd Knightriders, while 3rd Gordonians made it a double day of woe for Kintore, beating their second string at Countesswells, following the first eleven’s Grade 1 defeat to Banchory.
