The wonderful early summer weather has certainly given Grades cricket a great opportunity to showcase itself, a chance grabbed by a number of batsmen who amply demonstrated their skills in the May sunshine. In Grade 1, Akhlaq Bashir blasted his way to 126 for Bon Accord in a game at the Links where they beat Academy, while John Varghese stroked his way to an unbeaten 111 for Grampian in the victory over Mannofield. There were also solid knocks from Karan Anand (56) for AGSFPs and a match winning unbeaten 84 for Rowan Vaduganathan for Knight Riders at Kellands Park, while in the same match Chris Watson hit 59 for Inverurie.

The continuing spell of good weather has clearly lifted the spirits of cricketers in all the Grades, not least in the Grade 1 game between Mannofield and Stoneywood-Dyce at Harlaw where 15 year old Stuart Lister made hay while the sun shone with a sparkling century. The 115 runs clocked up by the teenager were a first of a ton for him before going on to open the batting for the senior side in their Scottish Cup tie on Sunday when he faced the world class attack of a RH Corstorphine side which included Majid Haq and Hammad Azam. Not to be outdone Indika Yahathugoda stepped up to the mark, scoring a stunning 171 of his own to win the game for Mannofield in a match that yielded 498 runs. But while the two were performing miracles, across the city AGSFPs and Knight Riders were enjoying their own shoot out in the sun. The pity of this match was that neither side deserved to lose, although in Karan Anand, the defending champions had the man of the match who not only hit a sumptuous unbeaten 99 to steer his side home but took four wickets for 23 to restrict the visitors to 193 for eight. In the meantime, Bon Accord were more sedately keeping themselves in the title race with a convincing 82 run win, making a huge dent in the prospects of Inverurie in the process. Not for the first time Fazal Awan stepping up to the mark with a half century and five wickets. It was much closer in the game between Crescent and Grampian at the Links where the league's newcomers made 150 but made the home side struggle all the way before easing home with only two wickets in hand and 3 balls to spare. Cults continue to struggle in the top grade and were no match for Academy who were convincing eight wicket winners at home to the Allan Park side.

The ACA Management Committee are pleased to advise that Isobel Reid (widely known as the Kemnay-Kintore scorer) has recently agreed to assist the ACA Committee in carrying out some of its administrative duties, including record management and supporting the ACA committees, as we look to move towards SCIO status and move towards succession planning for existing office bearers.

As indicated in the ACA 2018 Handbook all communications with the ACA, including protests, requests for advice on interpretation of Rules, or disciplinary references should now be sent to the Grades new centralised e-mail address acagradess@gmail.com where Isobel will monitor and distribute them to members of the ACA Committee as appropriate.

The various rules 13a, 13b and 13f under which players may be loaned to another club, as drafted, all require that the lending club have a full programme of scheduled fixtures on the relevant day; and hence apply only during the regular season.
The management committee has agreed that this condition can be regarded as also satisfied on days when their team has a scheduled free day, due to leagues having an odd number of teams, or without a fixture because scratched to. Players from clubs who themselves have scratched, or a match has been rained off are not however eligible for loan.
The restrictions on numbers of loan players who may be fielded, and the grades in which they may play - no more than 2 players from a lower grade, with no individual appearing on more than two occasions in grade 1 or 2; no more than 3 players in grade 3 - continue to apply, as does the requirement for agreement of the opposition captain to loans, including any restrictions on participation, for loans in grade 3.

AGSFPs continued its defence of the Grade 1 title with another nine wicket win at Rubislaw where Cults were dismissed for 86, giving the champions a near perfect start to their campaign. Henry Mapplebeck was the destroyer in chief, taking four wickets for 30, handing opener Alex Keith the opportunity to demonstrate his quick fire ability as a batsman. Keith hit an unbeaten 39, getting good support from Eddie Steinson who was 23 not out when they passed the total of the Allan Park side. Bon Accord were equally impressive, dismissing Grampian for 118 at Sheddocksley, before rattling off the required total for the loss of four wickets. Inverurie who look to be well capable of throwing down a title challenge to the big two were easy 112 winners away to Mannofield who fell short of the 226 for eight set by the visitors to the Links. The Knight Riders made a successful start to their season at the Peoples Park, bowling Stoneywood-Dyce out for 128 before going on to win by five wickets. In a low scoring game Crescent beat Academy by 5 wickets who were all out for 117.

In Grade 2, Ellon Gordon launched their season at the Gordon Park where they scored 173 all out. Jon Barratt scoring a fine 65 before Ellon Gordon captain Ben Webb took over, taking five Fraserburgh wickets for 27 as the visitors collapsed to 120.

In Grade 3, Crathie bounced back to form, bowling out 2nd Methlick for 65 in their chase of 125. Banchory won a nail biter at Sheddocksley where 2nd Grampian failed to hunt down 111, falling eight runs short on 103 for nine.
Only two weeks into the new season, but all the indications are that it is going to be a very competitive season in all three grades, making for a fascinating summer in prospect

AGSFPs served notice after one game that they will not easily relinquish the Grade 1 title so hard won last season, but the Rubislaw outfit will also have noted the good start former champions Bon Accord have made.
