The coming of June means it is time for the teams in the Thistle Sports Grades once again to turn their attention to Seven a side competition for the Press and Journal Trophy, with sevens specialists Bon Accord looking to make it a ninth successive title.

MrPurple  Jun 3 2007 - 11:13pm
With a third of the season just gone the race for the Grade 1 title once again looks to be resolving itself into a two-horse race between the current holders Bon Accord and their principal rivals Cults.
MrPurple  Jun 3 2007 - 11:08pm
First blood in the clash between the top two sides in the Grades at the weekend went to Cults at the weekend, as they had slightly the better of Saturday's drawn Grade 1 game at the Allan Park.
With 43 from Amol Saxena and 42 from Graeme Gillanders, the home side were dismissed for 184 in the 44th overs, T Malik taking three for 40 and Fazal Awan three for 46.  However, despite an innings of 86 from Nawaz Mirza the Bons in the end had to settle for a draw, as Narendra and Masood took six wickets between them.

Something has gone horribly wrong with the online grade 4 fixtures list, and all the weekends show the same fixtures from this weekend onward. Clearly that isn't right. I'll fix it as soon as I can, but in the mean time use the fixtures list shown here.
Edit 25 May 07: Grade 4 Fixtures have been corrected.
MrPurple  May 24 2007 - 2:17pm

Although perhaps unlikely to win the title themselves, Stonehaven once again showed at the weekend that they could again have a significant say in the destination of this year's Grade 1 title as they brought Ellon's previously-unblemished record to an end, beating them by four wickets at the Gordon Park, to leave Bon Accord and Cults once again locked at the top of the table as the only two sides still with maximum points following the first month of the season.

An umpire, yesterdayThe Grades umpires have received a boost this season with a sponsorship deal with The Kebab House, Tillydrone. This will hopefully encourage more ex-cricketers to pull on the white coats in the future.
Brand new umpires coats, suitably engraved with the sponsors name, are to be provided to all of our neutral umpires. Thanks are due to to the tireless behind the scenes negotiations of Bon Accord captain, Malik, for securing this deal with The Kebab House.

Kintore's early-season hopes of regaining the Grade 1 title they won in 2005 received another knock at the weekend, as for the second succesive wekend their batting crumbled aginst one of their principal rivals, current title-holders Bon Accord at the Links.

An unbroken opening partnership of 265 for Inverurie, featuring centuries from George Hadden and Mark Strachan, proved insufficient to stave off a remarkable two-wicket defeat by Mannofield, as the runs flowed in Saturday's Grade 1 game at the Links.
Elsewhere Cults shot out Kintore for just 59 at Castle Park, but needed an undefeated 28 from Bryan Alexander to overcome the home side; while Bon Accord and Ellon also remain on maximum points following their victories over Artisans and Grammar FPs respectively.
MrPurple  May 5 2007 - 10:41pm

All games scheduled to be played on Links 5 where possible have been rescheduled to alternative venues. The game between 2nd Mannofield and 2nd AGSFP's scheduled for this weekend 5/05/07 at Links 5 has been postponed due to the unavailability of an alternative venue.

Basically, when we advised that the standard ball was "dukes special crown" we did not realise that it came in so many flavours and that one or two clubs were opting for the lower standard balls. This was further highlighted when we were informed at the AGM that the ball could be purchased a lot cheaper than Thistle Sports, and after investigation we found that the ball supplied by Thistle Sports was of a much higher standard also the retail cost was £20+ per ball which Thistle were supplying for £12.50 + £1.

2nd Methlick's joy at starting the season with a win was dampened by the discovery that valuables had been stolen from their dressing room at Rubislaw while the match was in progress. Five players lost items, including a mobile phone and a wallet containing a credit card. The card had £700 worth of fraudulent transactions made on it before the match had even finished.
"We in no way hold Grammar responsible", said Methlick secretary Brian Anderson. "The first thing their boys told us was 'Do not leave any valuables in the locker room'. There are also signs informing you of the same thing, but alas the players arriving last did not see them and were in too much of a hurry to put their valuables back in their cars".
He went on to warn other clubs to take care in the future. "This was our own stupidity, but we would not like to see any other clubs or players lose out in such a manner".

Bon Accord win 2006 Turriff CupBon Accord claimed yet another 2006 Trophy as they easily beat Cults in the postponed final of last season's Turriff Cup played yesterday at Mannofield.  Ali Abbas Malik was named man of the match for his four wickets to 4 as the Allan Park side were shot out for 102, a total the Bons easily overhauled with knocks of 49 not out from Fazal Awan and 46 from Nawaz Mirza.
2nd Kintore beat 2nd Queens Cross in the outstanding fixture from Saturday's league programme.
MrPurple  Apr 29 2007 - 7:19pm
Three centuries and three hattricks were the main points of note in an opening round of games in the Thistle Sports Grades, where results in Grade 1 went largely with last season's forms.

After a short illness, Mike McPherson of Banff and Turriff Cricket Clubs died on Monday 15th January 2007,  aged 47.
Mike started his cricket career Banff, helping them to progress to Grade 1 before the club merged with Turriff. He continued to play at Turriff until 2006, when his illness prevented his participation.
Mike was one of the best bowlers ever to play in the Aberdeenshire grades. His pace, natural swing and control of the cricket ball saw him pick up hundreds of wickets and several individual grade bowling awards over the years. This was coupled with an ability to score runs with the bat which saw him reach the magical 3 figures on a number of occasions. These attributes, and his selfless will to win, helped both Banff and Turriff to league and cup triumphs over a career spanning more than 20 years, and also saw his inclusion in the grades select.
Mike will be sadly missed by all who knew and played with him at both Banff and Turriff Cricket Clubs as well as all who played against him over the years. All our thoughts are with his wife, four children and his family at this sad time.
A funeral service for Mike is to take place on Friday 19th January 2006, Macduff Parish Church at 1.30PM all friends are respectfully invited.

I’m bit disappointed that I can’t make the AGM. I’m tutoring on a level 1 course in the Scottish Borders on Sunday all day. I’ve added my stats for the amount of kids introduced to the game and playing it at junior clubs of course. Just want you to stress the point that I am there for every young player in the area and if clubs have talented youngsters even though they don’t have a junior section they have to inform me so that I can have a look at them because they could be potential Scotland players for all we know. Mark Assiter who won the junior batting award for the grades is a perfect example. If he didn’t sign onto a summer holiday camp 2 years ago I wouldn’t have seen him and got him to play junior cricket. And he is in our Scotland u/15 winter training group.

I also believe that there are quite a number of clubs that want to stick with draw in the lower grades even though some clubs wants the limited over version. They have approached me and asked for my support to get it changed. I personally think to get youngsters into the game that the draw format, doesn’t do us any justice. No 14 year old wants to stand on a cricket field all day and go home and say we had a no result. They would rather lose and try and do better next time to get that feeling of winning. I understand that its been there for a number of years but we have got to look at the bigger picture.
