The latest round of fixtures in the Thistle Sports Grades saw Bon Accord move back to the table, and Kintore into second spot, as previous leaders lost to Cults at the Allan Park in a low-scoring game which leaves the two sides level on points.

Once again the Bons were indebted for their win to a century from prolific opener Fazal Awan who finished undefeated  on 113, the next highest batsman scoring just 12 as the Links-based side chased Mannofield’s total of 168.

At the Allan Park meanwhile all twenty wickets fell for just 175 in a match in which the bowlers predominated throughout; and Kintore’s win over Ellon was a similarly low-scoring affair, with Kintore’s Phil Middleton the top batsman on either side finishing on 17 not out, as the visitors chased down Ellon’s modest total of 57.

The last fortnight’s results mean that the middle third of the Thistle Sports Grades season will be more than usually critical this year.

While Bon Accord should carry too much firepower for Mannofield in the match between the two Links-based sides, Cults will be anxious not to lose any more ground, following two successive defeats, when they take on current league leaders Stonehaven at the Allan Park; while Caledonian will be looking for points at the foot of the table to move ahead of Inverurie and 2nd Cults in the battle to avoid struggling against relegation.

In Grade 2 leaders St Ronald will hope to continue their unblemished league run at home to Scottish Regional Villages Cup winners Methlick; while Gordonians could consolidate their challenge for promotion if they beat Artisans, and Grammar FPs slip up against an improving Queens Cross side.

Wins for Stonehaven, Bon Accord and Kintore mean that current title holders, Cults, are for the meantime condemned to playing catch up in Grade 1 for once.

With a century from Jonathan Barrett also leading Ellon to victory over Banchory, this season's Grade 1 looks like being one of the most closely contested for a few seasons; while Mannofield gained valuable points ahead of Caledonian, 2nd Cults and Inverurie in the lower reaches of the table.

Fazal Awan was once again Bon Accord's match-winner in the clash at the Allan Park, top-scoring with 78 and taking four wickets as the visitors rattled up 238 for six before bowling their arch-rivals out for 161.

The Grades Select ran out emphatic winners in their First Round tie in the Three Counties Cup against Stonbeywood-Dyce, played at the Links on Monday evening. Helped by some wayward bowling from the visitors, which gifted them a total of 28 wides, the Grades' innings rattled along at 12 runs per over, openers Fazal Awan and Alex Keith being split only when Keith was stumped in the final of their 20 overs.

Faced with a target of 258 in gathering gloom, the visitors started brightly, but following the dismissal of Robert Lamb had to settle for a total of 154, Alex Keith rounding off his evening by taking two for 24.

A dramatic day in the Thistle Sports grades saw Cults and Bon Accord both lose their previously unbeaten records at the top of Grade 1, while Caledonian bounced back from their recent woes to tie with Banchory, 2nd Cults recorded their first victory at Grade 1 level, and in Grade 4 there was an undefeated double century.

For 1st Cults only Steve Morrison recorded a significant contribution with the bat as Jonathan Barrett with four wickets and Scott White with three, following on his joint top score of 36, combined to dismiss the current chmpions at the Gordon Park.

The improved weather of the past week was reflected in the Thistle sports Grades at the weekend, with generally improved batting performances, and a number of drawn games.

In all three players recorded centuries - South African D van der Vrley helping to improve Mannofield's position in the lower half of Grade 1, despite their being unable to close out victory against Banchory; while B Webb scored an undefeated 102 for Methlick in their victory over Kemnay, and Chris Forbes scored 107 and took three wickets against Turriff, but still finished up on the losing side.

Although only three weeks of the season have passed, the Thistle Sports Grade 1 table is already assuming a familiar look.
At the top Bon Accord and Cults both remain on maximum points, following their wins on Saturday; while after their opening weekend hiccups Kintore and Ellon have moved into position close behind, should either of the top two slip up; and Inverurie and Mannofield again look like competing with the two promoted sides, Caledonian and 2nd Cults to a

This Saturday sees a new first in the history of the Thistle Sports Grades as two teams from the same club clash in league competition.

The match concerned takes place at the Allan Park where 2nd Cults are formally at home to their first eleven and current title holders.  Based on results to date, and the fact that 6 of the first eleven players may play for only the first team, an away win is predicted.

Elsewhere at the top of Grade 1 Bon Accord are at home to Banchory; while their co-tenants at the Links, Mannofield, travel to Kintore.  Ellon will fancy their chances at home to Inverurie, while Stonehaven have a home tie against Caledonian.

There were few surprises in the top league in the second round of fixtures in the Thistle Sports Grades as Cults, Bon Accord and Kintore all recorded victories, while there were second defeats for Inverurie, Mannofield and promoted 2nd Cults.

At the Duthie Park however Caledonian put up a sound performance, dismissing Cults for 167 before Masud again turned in another match-winning bowling performance for the current champions.  Bon Accord and Kintore also lost over half their wickets in overhauling the low scores posted by Inverurie and Banchory respectively.
