Saturday's clash of the titans involving the top four sides in Grade 1 finished surprisingly tamely as Kintore crushed Ellon by 10 wickets to move to the top of the table, while previous leaders Bon Accord produced their poorest performance since the opening weekend of the season to go down to a 70-run defeat by Cults in a low scoring game at the Allan Park.

Two high-class bowling attacks were on top throughout the game at Cults, as only a late recovery spearheaded by Amol Saxena enabled the home side to recover from 72 for 6 to post a 3-figure total.  However, with new opening bowler Tatsat again in impressive form, Bon Accord were rapidly reduced to 7 for 3 with their prolific opener Awan falling for just 3; and although Nawaz Mirza hit out boldly, no one else scored double figures, and once he was caught by Pandit off Saxena the game was effectively decided, Saxena finishing with 5 wickets, and Arun mopping up the tail, taking the final two wickets with successive balls to leave himself on a hatttrick for next week.

The fascinating battle for this year's Grade 1 title took another unexpected turn at the weekend, as leaders Ellon lost out by 2 runs against Queens Cross at the Gordon Park, Rory Taylor taking six wickets and top-scoring with 38, to give the Harlaw side their fourth successive win.

MoonWe have received from Aberdeen City Council a request that players in games at Sheddocksley exercise appropriate discretion about, and desirably avoid, changing in the open air, as there have been a number of complaints from local residents in this regard.

When this issue was raised at the most recent Cricket Users Meeting it was pointed out to the council that this is difficult to eliminate for as long as it is an unmanned site after 5.00pm. Nonetheless, if people could either change in their cars or behind appropriate shelter it would be appreciated.

Bon Accord

Bon Accord were crowned as seven-times winners of the Press & Journal Trophy, as the rain finally relented to allow the final stages of this year's Thistle Sports Sevens to be played out at the Duthie Park last night.

From the moment they hit 38 off their opening over, the result of their Final against Cults A, who had earlier disposed of a strong Mannofield Seven, was never in serious doubt; and though the Allan Park side started well enough, some outstanding catches in the deep, and a sequence of run outs left Cults 44 runs short at the death.

In the final of the Duncan Cup, Kintore easily managed to overhaul Queens Cross's modest total of 48, after the Harlaw side had earlier convincingly defeated Cults' second string, to take them through to their first Sevens' final.

For his allround contribution Nawaz Mirza was once again named as man of the match in the Press & Journal Trophy final.

Not for the first time it was the players of the lower divisions who kept the flag of Grades Cricket flying, as persistent stormy showers meant that only one game was completed in the top two leagues.

MrPurple  Jun 25 2006 - 8:21pm

The final rounds of the Thistle Sports Sevens have now been re-scheduled for Monday evening, June 26th, at 6.30pm.

MrPurple  Jun 23 2006 - 2:27pm

Following last night's rain, the remaining Duncan Cup semi final and final games have been rescheduled to Thursday June 22 - semi-final at 6.30 (DP3), Final at 1945 (DP2).

The final stages of the P & J Trophy will also take place as scheduled that night - semi-finals at 6.30 (DP1 and DP2), final at 1945 (DP1).

See the fixtures list for full details.

MrPurple  Jun 20 2006 - 1:47pm

Persistent drizzle and bad light brought a premature end to the final stages of the Duncan Cup at the Duthie Park last night.

With Ellon having now scratched from the competition, provided that the three remaining teams and a third pitch at the Park are all available, then an effort will be made to re-schedule the two outstanding games to this Thursday, concurrently with the final stages of the Press & Journal Trophy.  If that is not possible,  then they will be played off next Monday.

Clubs will be advised of the agreed revised arrangements not later than mid-afternoon on Tuesday.

Meantime the final stages of the Press & Journal Trophy will go ahead as planned on Thursday, with holders Bon Accord taking on St Ronald in one semi-final, and Mannofield playing Cults A in the other.
