Mannofield youngster Lewis Munro has been described as an up and coming bowler on the books of the North-East's premier club, and yet there was the talented 15 year old making his mark as a batsman for the Caledonian Highlanders Under 15's on Thursday scoring 112 accumulated from 71 balls. The quick fire century made him a hot tip in a strong field competing for our junior of the year award. And with the list growing, it looks like being a fascinating run for this new competition, but keep the names coming, in fact the more the better.

Hard on the heels of our good news stories about young, developing players, along comes another from not surprisingly Stoneywood - Dyce, a club well known for producing top line youngsters for the game.

Jack Lambley may only be 14, and has only been playing the game for three years, but last Sunday he stunned his teammates in a development game against Aberdeen Grammar FP's, hitting an astonishing 142, which included some big hits, out of all proportion to his young years, according to those who were privileged to watch the knock.

Rain brought an early halt to proceedings yesterday at Lochlands, Forfar where the game between an ACA Grades Select and SPCU Select was called off after the Aberdeen side had been bowled out for 122 from 20.2 overs.
Fazal Awan of Bon Accord and Indika Yahathugoda of ACE Mannofield were joint top scorers with 39 in a game which had been restricted to 25 overs per side, and was finally abandoned before the Strathmore Union Select had an opportunity to bat.

Knight Riders caused the upset of the day in Grade 1, beating title chasing AGSFPs, enabling Academy to leap frog the Rubislaw side, while giving leaders Bon Accord some breathing space at the head of affairs.

The Groats Road side batted first, racking up a challenging total of 222 for the loss of seven wickets thanks to half centuries for Sivaganesan Palaniappan (55) and Somasundaram Kumarasamy (52), while Sam Knudson was the most successful bowler for AGSFPs, claiming three for 34.

Clubs are reminded that results for the preliminary round of the Turriff Cup and agreed original and reserve dates for the quarter finals before the second weekend of August should be reported for the Management Committee meeting scheduled for Monday 10 July?

Under the revised rules approved at last year’s AGM, clubs may play on a Sunday; but only if both clubs agree and there is no impact on other Association competitions or representative games.  Otherwise the default position for rounds prior to Finals Day is now a weekday evening, which given the Evening League appears now to have concluded, could include a Tuesday or Wednesday – with overs being reduced to 10 or 15 if necessary.

wytbu8  Jul 4 2017 - 6:59pm

Lochlands Park in Forfar is the venue on Sunday 9th July for the clash between the ACA Grades Select and the SPCU Select. Two very strong teams will line up for a 1:00pm start for a 45 overs a side match. The SPCU Select side comfortably beat the NoSCA Select at Mannofield last month, and are again captained by Swapnil Rane of Gordonians. The ACA Grades Select will be captained by Tauqeer Malik of Bon Accord who will be looking to reverse their defeat by the SPCU Select at the same ground in 2015.

wytbu8  Jul 4 2017 - 4:32pm

The contest in Grade 1 developed into a three way race after leaders Bon Accord, AGSFPs and the season's shock troops Academy all won their games in some style.
The most impressive performance of the day was at Kellands Park where Inverurie Don Valley looked to have posted a winning score of 197 for three only to be beaten by Academy who passed the home total with two wickets in hand, thanks to a patient, controlled 54 from Phani Prattipati. For the home side Chris Watson scarcely deserved to be on the losing side after hitting a sparkling 75. George Hadden was no less efficient with a painstaking unbeaten 62, though it was not enough to get the better of the tenacious Sheddocksley side.
Bon Accord were in equally good form at home to Kemnay-Kintore, racking up 270 for four before bowling out a weakened Bogbeth Park side for 89. The main men for the champions were Saif Ahmed (126), Fazal Awan (94) and destroyer in Chief Jaimeek Bhalani who took five for 15 as the visitors collapsed in the face of pressure from the unrelenting Bon Accord side.
Second placed AGSFPs were well up to the poor challenge of Cults who were bowled out for 71, chasing a total of 189, five wickets falling to Sam Knudson for a mere 26 runs. The principal scorer for the Rubislaw side was opener Alex Keith with a quick fire 49.
At Groats Road Knight Riders 193 all out proved to be too much for ACE Mannofield who succumbed to the home attack for 155. Sivaganesan Palaniappan hit a splendid 83 for the home side, and Mannofield’s own run machine was Indika Yahathugoda who has scored two centuries to date this season, topped scored for his team with 52.
In Grade 2 Stoneywood-Dyce's stranglehold on the title was loosened by second placed Grampian who bowled the visitors out for 145 before chasing the total down for the loss of six wickets. Banchory came tantalisingly near to registering its first win of the season, having been bowled out for 80 of which Graeme Nixon scored a stubborn 25, they took eight 2nd Knight Riders wickets before its own total was surpassed.
In Grade 3 Aberdeen Super Kings made inroads into Stonehaven Thistle's lead, taking advantage of the leaders not being in action, beating 2nd AGSFPs by 47 runs.
In the only game played in Grade 4 2nd Methlick beat Turriff by eight wickets at the Haughs. Rob Fryer scored an entertaining 58 for the winners.

At a time when cricket throughout the country is in decline, it is massively encouraging that clubs in ACA Grades are giving youngsters the opportunity to make their mark in the game, including the major breakthrough of the brother and sister duo at Fraserburgh.

From where I sit in the shade and safety of the press box, I suspect that Ryan (11) and Leanne (13) Broadley are just the tip of the iceberg, as more and more young cricketers are being exposed to competitive games in the Grades. More power to these daring, but progressive clubs who clearly see that the future of the game rests in the development of a youth programme.
